Growing Civilizations

Image result for early farming after the ice age
In Chapter 2, Section 1, we learned how farming affected the lives of people in the period after the Ice Age. With that in mind, answer this section focus question using evidence, examples, and page numbers from your textbook:
How do civilizations arise, and what characteristics do they share?

88 comments:

  1. Most people became civilized after the Ice Age ended. The melted ice had made the soil fertile and nutritious, leading people to start growing crops of their own 2,000 years later. This gave people of that time more time, which lead to development of culture. People started to invent and trade, making lives for early humans more civilized and sophisticated.

  2. How do civilizations arise, and what characteristics do they share? Civilizations arose mainly because of farming. One benefit of farming was that people could build permanent homes and villages. Farming changed the way people lived. Nomads stopped wandering and settled in one place. Many different people moved together in one place, forming a village, such as Catalhuyuk. But later, more people moved in small villages forming a city. One of the oldest known cities was Uruk. Uruk was different from other villages because it was much larger, it’s government, and it had a more complex economy. Small villages’ economy was based mostly on farming, but large cities such as Uruk was based on both on farming and trade. (pgs. 40 and 41)

  6. Civilizations rose because some early cities became more powerful and grew in size. The rise of a civilization needed a surplus of food. In order to create a surplus of food, people had to manage their resources well (pg42). The most important resources that people needed were rich soil, water, and seeds. However, civilizations also needed good tools and planning and organization(pg42).

Many civilizations shared many characteristics. some of these characteristics were cities, which served as centers of religion, well organized government , which maintained the society's resources, religion, which helped them share their beliefs. Some other characteristics are job specialization , which helped a person help the community by doing a skill he or she is good at, social classes, which helped people get an amount of land based on their rank, highly developed culture, which helped produce many activities to do in spare time. the final common feature is the system of writing , which helped the early people record important events, or numbers.(pg43-45).

  7. Civilization started after the last Ice Age. After a while early humans started getting used to this cold weather and they learned how to farm. Some people started relying on fish and water, since they didn't want to farm. Farmers also learned about an amazing animal named a sheep which provided them clothes, a food, and much more. Many farmers planted wheat, barley, squash, etc. Later on a whole community would start relying on 3 or 4 farms. This is how a city or village came together and people started working together to have better resources and food. Then cities decided to have a council government, or a ruler, such as a king. This is how civilization started. Early people shared many characteristics such as working hard.
After the Ice Age early humans really worked hard to earn their living. They also learned many things such as how to farm. They even started their own city.

  8. Climate change 12,000 years ago forced people to adapt and to give up moving around a lot which resulted in rise of Civilizations. With onset of global warming, temperatures and sea level rose, rainfall patterns changed, Ice Age animals and plants species died out. People moved to search for new sources of food. They started to farm, domesticate animals and plants resulting in abundant food. With abundant food supply, not everyone had to farm. Some people started to specialize in a craft such as tool making, pottery, weaving and metalworking. People living close together in communities started to trade extra food for certain crafts. Civilizations shared responsibilities, team work and common good. (Pg. 32-39).

  9. Civilizations began when the last Ice Age ended. The people formed communities and farmed crops. They made permanent homes in small villages. For food, they would grow crops. They needed water, rich soil, and seeds to plant their crops. If they managed their crops well they would have a surplus of food. Later civilizations created a council with upper and lower classes. There would be a king and nobles. The king would control the land and civilization. People of lower class usually built the architecture in the land.

  10. Civilizations were arised by people building homes, planting crops, and making clothing. Civilizations were not created instantly; they took a long period of time for them to be developed. The only way civilizations would be created is if they were geographically located in rich lands, such as river valleys. Civilizations were mostly created near major river valleys. These river valleys provided them water and moist soil to grow their crops.
The characteristics that these civilizations share are cities, well organized government, and skilled workers. These skilled workers had an assigned task to complete. Well developed organizations have a well trained army to defend themselves from others.

  17. About 12,000 years ago when the last ice age came to an end civilization started to slowly start. Temperatures rose, causing glaciers to melt and cover valleys and other water resources. Most plants and animals adapted to the climate change but some species who savored the cold have died. The death of certain animals caused hunters who hunted them to find something else to eat. People found different sources of food. People who lived near rivers , lakes , began to depend on fish and other types of food. Over periods of time people started to domesticate plants and animals that they would use in their daily lives. When this started farming started. People found which seed produces the best crop and would produce over and over. Smaller animals were easier to manage than large animals (PG 32-33).

The Middle East was were agriculture first started which started about 10,000 years ago. Scientist have found unearthed seeds buried beneath the ground long ago from domesticated wheat plants. The seeds are similar to wheat still grown in the area. Farming spread from The Middle East westward into Africa. Farming began with growing of wheat and barley in southwestern Asia. From there it spread to present-day Egypt. In the southern part of present - day China, Farming began with the domestication of rice. Farther north a grain called millet was the first crop to be domesticated (PG 34).

  18. Civilizations form when a group of people settle in one place and grow food. These people work very hard to grow food for their families. They usually live in a river valley. Most civilizations depended mostly on farming. Farmers waited and planned for the next harvest. When there was a surplus food, a farmer would keep enough for his family and sell the rest. This allowed people to specialize in things other than farming.

  19. Most people in the Ice Age were hunter gatherers. After the last Ice Age people had to adapt to a changing environment in order to survive. When the last Ice Age ended a long period of global warming began. Temperatures rose around the world, and rainfall patterns changed. Glaciers that have covered the earth shrank, and ocean levels rose. Most plants and animals adapted to this change, except Ice Age animals, they couldn’t adapt to warm weather so some species died out (pg. 32). Some people adapted to these changes by searching new sources of food. Others domesticated plants and animals that they used for food (pg.33). Farming changed the way people lived. Nomads stopped wandering and settled in one place (pg.36). Some families raised a surplus to feed themselves. When there was a surplus not everyone In a village needed to farm so some just specialized (pg.37).

  28. How did civilizations arise and what characteristics did they share?

Civilizations arose at around 10,000 B.C when the last great Ice Age ended. At around 3,000 B.C people discovered how to

farm and how to domesticate animals. People could farm for 2 reasons. The first reason was because people learned how to

farm. The second reason was because when the last great Ice Age ended it had left behind nutritious soil that was in

perfect condition for farming. Civilizations also had to be near rivers because people had to use irrigation for watering thier crops. People also had to domesticate thier animals which means to ''reproduce'' animals. There were also dangers to farming too.Sometimes nomads would come through the civilizations and would basically steal everything the people had! People in these kind of civilizations would also have towork very hard to survive! Sometimes the rivers that were near these civilizations would dry out and since these people did not want to move they would eventually die of starvation. Civilizations also contained the following items listed below:

    .Acres of land
    .Markets
    .Worshipping centers

When people had more than enough food then they would have a surplus. This allowed people to specialize in other activities too like pottery and crafts.Souces:Textbook Pages:(42-45)

Civilizations shared many things in common like farming and domesticating animals.Civilizations all started in 10,000 B.C and first appeared in the Middle-East.

  32. Civilizations started when the ice age ended about 10,000years ago. Then, people started to domesticate certain plants and animals, and this led to the birth of farming. The world’s first cities started to form in the Middle East around 3500 B.C. Over time, as the population of people grew, villages started to trade with other villages. Some of these villages became cities. Like trade, farming became an important source of wealth. A city called Uruk, located in present-day Iraq was founded around 5000 B.C, historians call this place the first “city”. Though, Uruk was not the first city in the Middle East, before a village called “Catalhuyuk” and other villages were olcder, but Uruk was different in many ways. A few of these differences were the city’s size, whicj was around 1,000 acres, the population of people living there, around 40,000, the economy, and the form of government was different. Compared to” Catalhuyuk”, it was about 32 acres big and had no more than 6,000 people. Surplus of food led to wealth, people sold that food or traded it for something. The most important resources were soil, water, and seeds. However, these resources were worth little if not produced and planted correctly. Another civilization called the “Maya” civilizations began in the rain forests of present-day Mexico and Central America. Also, the “Inca” civilization began in the Andes Mountains of South America. In general, all civilizations shared seven same features. The first feature was that Cities served as center of religion, government, and culture. The second feature was that the early civilizations had a well-organized government. The third common feature was that civilizations were an established religion. Job specialization was the fourth feature that was common between civilizations. The fifth feature was the development of social classes, like ranks from highest to lowest. A highly developed culture was the sixth feature of most early civilizations. The seventh and the final feature is that is that most early civilization had a system of writing.

  37. Civilizations arose after the Ice Age ended. Civilizations arose depending on the creation of food surplus, which depended on how people managed their resources. The most essential resources people needed were soil, water, and seeds. To manage these resources well they needed a certain level of skill with planting and organization, which managed a new stage of human society. The first civilization took place in the Middle East. Four major civilizations developed in river valleys, which is one similarity between different civilizations. However, some civilizations did not develop in river valleys. For example, the Maya civilization took place in a forest in present day Mexico. Civilizations shared a few features. For example, they had an established religion. With most early civilizations, they shared a belief of many gods. Another shared feature was the system of writing. At first, writing was only used to record numbers, but later on they were used to record many other kinds of information. Pgs. 42-45
